Using Mudlogging As a Formation Evaluation Tool 2020

Using Mudlogging As a Formation Evaluation Tool 2020
The course gives an overview of mudlogging practices and procedures with an emphasis on using mud gas readings for formation evaluation. Topics covered include common measurements, definitions, and quantifying the amount of gas typically seen in reservoirs. The course will follow the cuttings and gas on their trip, starting from the undrilled formation to the final surface measurements. The trip up the annulus for the gas and cuttings will include a review of near bit/cutting/flushing interactions; a comparison of lagging methods with attention paid to lagging gas and drill cuttings in horizontal wells; how drilling fluids along with other drilling parameters influence mud gas shows; and how surface gas traps, sample lines, instrumentation, and sensors impact the mud gas show. After the “reservoir to measurement” review, techniques used to quantify mud log gas shows are presented. These techniques estimate gas in place from mud log data using calcium carbide lag markers, mud gas normalization, deterministic normalization, and rules of thumb. Mud gas ratios and geochemical methods are reviewed. Cutting lagging and sample evaluation, which are new and novel, will be discussed. An Excel spreadsheet will model anticipated measured gas response. The final portion of the course will be devoted to mudlog quality control and recent advances in mudlogging.
